Sage One

Sage One is a cloud-based business services solution aimed at micro businesses and small business. Sage One provides these businesses a platform that offers invoicing, project tracking, expense management, and more. For $29 per month, entrepreneurs, mom-and-pop shops, and? small business owners, are given an integrated service to perform primary business functions. Sage One allows small business owners to focus on running their business and not have to learn complicated accounting and business software. Sage One offers a? fluid, user-friendly interface and intuitive workflow, although its one-size-fits all functionality limits customizations.

You can try Sage One for free for 30 days. Although the pricing is $29 per month, the service is now available at a promotional price of $1 per month, for three months. With Sage One, customers receive 5GB of storage, support, unlimited number of team members, and the ability to add a second administrator account. Additional administrator accounts are an?extra $10 per month.

Signing Up
Sage One has a clean, easy-to-use interface. During a demo of the product, our Editor-In-Chief remarked that the interface had a similar look to Mint.com. Both services have a similar UI, which focuses on ease-of-use, but, of course, Mint.com is for personal finance and Sage One is for small business.

The sign up process is simple, but a bit lengthy with several security check questions to set up and password complexity requirements, inconvenient perhaps, but necessary when you are placing your business data in the cloud.

Once you log in, you have a few options: to view a video overview or start customizing your settings. The initial configuration steps for most include, adding your company information such as business name, address and so on. This information appears on your invoices.

The workflow in a nutshell, works like this: add clients and contacts, add projects, assign tasks to collaborators and employees, collaborate on tasks and projects, bill clients, and keep track of income and expenses. Sage One is a scaled-down, integrated accounting, collaboration and project management cloud service. One business process it lacks, though, is payroll.

Starting Projects and Configuring
Starting a project involves adding a project name, client name, estimated time to complete the project, estimated expenses and billable fees. Banking and credit card information can be added as well. Doing so allows you to keep track of financial transactions. However, you can't directly connect a checking or other bank or credit account with your Sage One account as you can with Intuit QuickBooks Premier Edition 2011. Intuit's service, however,? has more emphasis on the accounting side of business.

Anyone using Sage One to track financial services has to ensure that banking information within Sage One and information from their live accounts is in sync, which may be a bit of a hassle for those who do lots of financial transactions. You also can't import business information from other systems except for contacts; done?by importing a text-delimited file.

You can, however, set up ledgers. Several pre-created ledgers exist that you can apply to your business such as Accounts Payable, Accounts Receivable, Sales Tax, Office Supply Expenses, and others. Each time income or expenses are recorded a category?based on the ledger account?is assigned to the transaction.

There's also some good help within the interface. For example, you may not be well-acquainted with terminology such as "Asset," "Liability," or "Equity." The help text breaks down business terms in simple English and also advises you to call Sage support for more clarification and assistance.

Sage One has some canned reports, three actually, including one for viewing aged invoices, balance sheets, and profit and loss.? Reports can be saved as PDFs or exported as CSV files.

There's a message on the reports page from Sage One encouraging users to submit suggestions for other reports. That type of communication and willingness to work with a small business owner is Sage One's biggest strength. In fact, the site's contact's page has a full bio and contact information for every member of the Sage One team for you to reach them with questions and comments.

One Size May Not Fit All & Other Annoyances
Sage One does not offer much in the way of customization. You can do simple tailoring like uploading your company logo to add to invoices, and you can make some tweaks on individual invoices, but you can't edit invoice templates, which is not so great because different businesses may need different elements on their invoices.

One other minor issue I encountered when working within Sage One, I didn't find any way to assign more than one contact to a task. If you have two employees you want to assign the same task, it seems as though the only option is to create two separate tasks for each.

A Very Good Starter Service
Sage One is a great solution for very small businesses with no more than nine employees, with the caveat that, as it stands the service doesn't offer much by way of customization and scalability. Every business owner's intent is to grow, right? As your business grows and data needs grow, without the ability to integrate with other platforms or banking institutions, a thriving small business may eventually outgrow Sage One. Scalability is very limited without the ability to integrate with or export data to other financial systems.

Still, there's no denying the appeal of a reasonably priced, simple to use service that combines most of the major functionality a small business could need into one central, portal. Even in this early incarnation, Sage One is a solid four-star service. I'm very interested to see how Sage beefs up the service (by adding banking integration and a payroll module, for example) in the next few months.?

iOS slammed as "crystal prison" by Electronic Frontier Foundation

The Electronic Frontiter Foundation (EFF), an electronic rights activist group, has recently labeled the iPhone and iPad app ecosystem as a "crystal prison" for developers and end-users. The EFF's main justifications for this conclusion include Apple's content filters, restrictions on code usage (like ones tapping into AirPlay uninvited), and limiting developers to using Apple's payment infrastructure (though some devs seem pretty happy with the current set-up).

Meet Cam Dye; Pro Triathlete, Boulder's native son ... - Tri Fatherhood

Dear Izzy, Max, and Kate,

A couple of weeks ago I introduced you to Bree Wee: pro triathlete, surf girl, and mom. I want to continue to introduce you to great people who are excelling in both sport and life ?through my letters to you.

At Rev3 Knoxville as I headed out onto the bike course a rocket shot past me headed back into transition. That rocket was Cameron Dye on a Kestrel. (I ride a Kestrel too, just not as fast as Cam!). ?He?s a young professional triathlete and is building quite a reputation for himself by winning big races across the globe.

In 2011 he won the Nautica South Beach Triathlon and the LA Triathlon with 2nd place finishes at Memphis in May and Rev3 Knoxville. So far this season he?s won Rev3 Costa Rica and the Columbia Triathlon and it seems he?s just getting warmed up.

Now just 27 years old (that?s still young for a multisport athlete) he started swimming competitively at 8 years old. Cam did his?first triathlon at 15.

After a college swim career he?turned pro as a triathlete in 2007 and immediately established himself as a force to be reckoned with in the water. He?s since become one of the fastest 40k TT cyclists in all of triathlon.

I?m introducing you to him, because now he?s not only a great triathlete, but he?s also a husband and a new dad. I?m excited for Cam, because I know there?s so much joy ahead of him as he watches his son grow. I also wanted to hear how it?s going now.

I had a chance to talk with him recently about marriage, fatherhood, triathlon, and balancing the 3.

1.?How long have you and Natalie been married?

Cam: I?ve been married to my lovely wife for 1.5 yrs.

2. How did you two meet?

Cam: We met at a Christmas party in 2009, the host was a mutual friend of ours.

3. What part does your wife play in your success as an athlete?

Cam: She plays a huge part. Everything from allowing me to focus on training when I need to by doing all the little things around the? house, to picking me up after a bad race, to always being there for me? when things are going good or bad. Having that unwavering support in place has allowed me to really start to achieve some of the things I have set out to do in the sport of triathlon, and in life.

4. The time commitment it takes to excel in triathlon is often a source of stress for a lot of couples. How do you two deal with the time commitment and?discipline it requires to compete at the pro level? Advice on that?subject?

Cam: ?The time commitment is huge, and it has definitely taken some work for?the two of us to really be on the same page all the time. In this case?being a pro and doing this for a living actually makes it easier as we both know that my training and rest is paramount to my success and our livelihood in the sport. The biggest thing for us has been communication, and making sure that we both know what the other person needs. There are days where my wife needs me to watch our son, or run an errand and I have to adjust my training schedule, but we have found that as long as we talk, we are almost always able to accommodate the? other. The other thing about the time commitment as a pro is that there are a lot of little breaks in the day when you are not training and can spend time together. Grabbing lunch or a coffee allows me to relax and us the opportunity to spend some time together that if I was working in an office I wouldn?t ever have.

I guess my best advice would just be communicate. I know its a lot easier to say than execute, but if you keep each other in the loop then you both feel more connected to what is going on and will be more likely to work around each other?s schedules when necessary. We try really hard to go on dates as often as we can, and since our son was born our definition of a date has broadened greatly. We aren?t always able to get to the dinner and movie we would like, but we grab coffee or lunch whenever we can, and just try and get in some good time alone together. Having both of our parents near by has been amazing, as they are the best babysitters in the world, and the only people we know that will call to offer to watch the baby for us.

5. Your son Liam is 7.5 months old now. How did your triathlon life change when Liam was born?

Cam:?Triathlon for me didn?t change a whole lot because we were fortunate that he was born right at the end of my 2011 season, and then I had the whole off season to get?through the sleepless nights and get adjusted. By the time the season really got going he was sleeping better and he really hasn?t forced many changes in my day to day schedule. He has even gone with my wife and I to my last couple races, and it has been really nice to bring the family along and keep that sense of normalcy when I travel to big races.

6. What measures do you take to keep family time your top priority amid all of the training and travel?

Cam: This has been the hardest thing for me. It is something that I believe is extremely important but at the same time it requires the most? effort on my part as an athlete. To be great at athletics there is a certain degree of selfishness required to make sure that training and?recovery are getting the priority that they need, and it has been a bit of a learning process to make sure that I make enough time for the?family. Lately, my wife and I have tried to be better about getting?off the phones and the computer at night when we are home together and?I have been trying to play with my son in the mornings before my?training day really starts. It is a constant work in progress but as?long as I make it a priority, I will always be able to make the time.

7. Do your wife and son travel with you to races?

Cam:?They have gone to St Anthony?s and Rev3 Knoxville so far this year and we are planning on them coming to at least a few more this year. He is still so young that we have found 2-3 hours is about the longest we?want to fly with him, so that will limit some races but still give us all the opportunity to travel together a fair amount.

8. Is that stressful or has your family learned to enjoy the journey?

Cam:?Honestly, I think it is more stressful for my wife than for me. She?does such an amazing job of taking care of the lil man while we travel? and really tries to let me focus on just racing. I get a bit stressed?traveling with a baby just because of all the extra stuff and time?that is required but once we get to a race, its just nice to have them?along for the adventure. There is nothing better than finishing a?race, good or bad, and seeing your wife and son at the finish line.

9. Does your family play a role in your race selection?

Cam:?Right now with my family being so young race selection is more left up?to me. I go to the races I decide will be best for my racing career.? As Liam gets older I suspect the family will play a bigger role in?some selections as far as good vacation destinations, but in short?course racing doing the races in a series or qualifying races plays?the biggest role in where the athletes end up. Unfortunately, my son?is yet to talk to 5150 or Toyota Cup about where he would like their?races to be held and until then I am sort of at the mercy of the series.

10. Living in Boulder with so many pros, do your families know and spend?time together?

Cam:?I have always said my claim to fame thus far has been that I am a pro?triathlete that was born at Boulder Community Hospital. As you said though there have been plenty of people moving to town over the years?and through racing and training my wife and I have gotten to know a lot of them. We do hang out a fair amount with some of the other families, but really most of the time we spend with other triathletes?is spent with my good friends that I also train with at Apex Coaching.?As of now I am sort of the old man in the group as I am the only one?with a child, but all of the other guys have adopted Liam as their own?and some even refer to themselves as Uncle. We have a great group of?training partners and seriously talented athletes that also happen to?be great people and it makes hanging out away from racing a lot of?fun.

11. Do you have any advice on how to involve your kids in your love for?the?outdoors?

Cam:?At this point I would say it is more advice I have gotten than personal experience. Since Liam is so young right now the best we do really is an afternoon in the park or a walk, but as he gets older I really look forward to spending time with him outdoors and playing sports. He has already dipped his feet in the ocean and spent plenty of time in the yard and seeing as my wife and I both love the outdoors I think it will be easy to get him involved as he gets older just by bringing him along. It seems to me that kids, at least young ones, tend to do what their parents do, so I think the best thing is just to get them outside and moving. I think a big part of my athletic background comes from my parents sending me outside to play when I was young and not letting me stay in front of the TV. We didn?t own any sort of video game console until I was about 12 and even then being active outside was so engrained in me that I never really played it that much. I hope to cultivate that same love of being active with my kids through example and time together outside and moving.

12. Away from triathlon what does your family do for fun?

Cam: In general we just try and do a lot of things together. Since my work schedule is a bit different each day and week to week, we just try and? do things together whenever we can. Be it a walk down on Pearl Street for a coffee, or a quick trip to the mountains for the weekend, we just try and do things as a family. I am really excited for my son to get a little bit older so that when we go places we can expose him to more things and show him all the awesome things that are out there.

13. You have to eat a clean diet most of the year.? Does your family follow your diet as well or do they do their own thing part of the time?

Cam: Well to be completely honest, my ?clean? diet is only so clean. I do try and eat healthy most of the time but I definitely have a weakness for the finer things in life like chocolate, dessert and pizza. My wife does a good majority of the cooking at home which means that her and I both eat a pretty healthy diet most of the time. It is important for my training, and for health in general. That said I do think there is a place for just about any food in moderation and we try and take advantage of that when I am in a big training block or during the off season.

14. What life lessons do you hope Liam takes away from your career as a professional triathlete?

Cam: Whether it is from my career directly or just from sports in general I think there are a lot of good lessons to be learned. Growing up a swimmer taught me everything there is to know about time management, and it also taught me how to set goals and then work hard to get to? them. I think my kids can learn those two as well as hopefully the idea that you can do things you love for a living, and that there are so many opportunities out there that you can take advantage of. I want them to see that I had a dream when I was young and I worked really hard to follow through and make that a reality and whether it is in sports or some other avenue of life, people do realize their dreams.

15. What do you hope your kids will remember about growing up with a pro triathlete as their dad?

Cam:?I hope they remember a lot, because if they do it means that I raced for a long time and they got to enjoy a lot of years of traveling. I think triathlon as a career offers so many unique opportunities to travel and see the things that I hope they appreciate that when they get older. By traveling all over the world they will meet all kinds of people and see all kinds of things that they wouldn?t being at home in Boulder, and I hope those experiences give them a better understanding of the world.

16. Favorite ?family movie??

Cam: Liam?s still too young really, but my wife owns about every Disney movie ever made so I am guessing it will start there.

17.? Liam?s favorite race destination?

Cam: Not many to choose from but I would say St Anthony?s thus far. He loved watching the ocean and anywhere there are a ton of people is exciting for him.

18. What is your typical prerace meal?

Cam: The night before I try and get some good local Hawaiian Pizza. Then the morning of it is all about the maple syrup and brown sugar instant oatmeal.

19. If you weren?t a pro triathlete what would you be doing?

Cam:?My joking, but half serious answer is a professional bull rider, but the more realistic one is I would have probably at least ventured? temporarily into the business world after graduating with a finance degree.

20. Three people you?d love to hang out with for a day?

Cam: I am assuming you mean people that I don?t ordinarily get to see, and while there are a ton of interesting people I guess three would be:? Warren Buffet, The Rock (Dwayne Johnson), and?Peyton Manning.

21. Favorite band/artist?

Cam: Depending on the mood, Jay-Z, Garth Brooks, or Jack Johnson.

22. One song that gets you fired up to race?

Cam: ?Till I Collapse, Eminem

23. Favorite sports team?

Cam: College, the Iowa Hawkeyes. Pro, the Denver Broncos.

24. I am personally curious about this one?coming from Boulder, CO how did you end up going to college in Dan Gable country in Iowa City?

Cam:? I knew I wanted a big sports school and my Mom is from Iowa so I knew I loved the people in the Midwest. Finally, it came down to the recruiting trips I took for swimming and of all the schools and cities I just like the team and the town at Iowa the best. I absolutely believe it was the best college experience I could have hoped to have, and swimming with one of Dan?s (Gable)?daughters and having a BBQ at his house were just some of the perks.

25. Final word of advice for average age groupers with limited time who are? juggling family, triathlon, and a full time job?what?s the most? important thing that we do to progress as triathletes without taking away from our families?

Cam: I think for most triathletes this is the million dollar question, and I think, believe it or not the answer is relatively simple. Be consistent but flexible. I know that sounds strange but if you can consistently fit in your workouts you will improve as an athlete, and if you can be flexible with them at times, your family will never be left behind. Remember that something is better than nothing, so if you need to cut a workout short, or rearrange a week that is ok and will not negatively impact your training. If you have a long ride you really want to do, make sure it gets on the family calendar way in advance so that everyone knows it is going on, and if your kid gets sick and you end up not being able to do it remember what your priorities are. Involve your family in your training and racing when you can, and they will think it is that much cooler when you are out training or crossing the finish line. The last thought would be to remember that racing and training is supposed to be fun so when you can get out with groups or just a couple guys. You can be competitive and have more fun with your workouts than when you are slogging away by yourself. Unless you are getting paid, training and racing should never feel like a job.

I hope you kids enjoyed meeting Cam Dye. You can follow more of his adventures on his blog here.?Follow him on twitter @camdyetri

Folk musician Doc Watson dies in NC hospital at 89

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. (AP) ? Doc Watson, the Grammy-award winning folk musician whose lightning-fast style of flatpicking influenced guitarists around the world for more than a half-century, died Tuesday at a hospital in Winston-Salem, according to a hospital spokeswoman and his management company. He was 89.

Watson, who was blind from age 1, recently had abdominal surgery that resulted in his hospitalization.

Arthel "Doc" Watson's mastery of flatpicking helped make the case for the guitar as a lead instrument in the 1950s and 1960s, when it was often considered a backup for the mandolin, fiddle or banjo. His fast playing could intimidate other musicians, even his own grandson, who performed with him.

Richard Watson said in a 2000 interview with The Associated Press that his grandfather's playing had a humbling effect on other musicians. The ever-humble Doc Watson found it hard to believe.

"Everybody that's picked with you says you intimidate them, and that includes some of the best," Richard Watson told him.

Doc Watson was born March 3, 1923 in what is now Deep Gap, N.C., in the Blue Ridge Mountains. He lost his eyesight by the age of 1 when he developed an eye infection that was worsened by a congenital vascular disorder, according to a website for Merlefest, the annual musical gathering named after his late son Merle.

Doc Watson's father, who was active in the family's church choir, gave him a harmonica as a young child, and by 5 he was playing the banjo. He learned a few guitar chords while attending the North Carolina Morehead School for the Blind in Raleigh, and then his father helped him buy a guitar for $12, the website says.

"My real interest in music was the old 78 records and the sound of the music," Doc Watson is quoted as saying on the website. "I loved it and began to realize that one of the main sounds on those old records I loved was the guitar."

Doc Watson got his musical start in 1953, playing electric lead guitar in a country-and-western swing band. His road to fame began in 1960 when Ralph Rinzler, a musician who also managed Bill Monroe, discovered Watson in North Carolina. That led Watson to the Newport Folk Festival in 1963 and his first recording contract a year later. He went on to record 60 albums.

According to the Encyclopedia of Country Music, Watson took his nickname at age 19 when someone couldn't pronounce his name and a girl in the audience shouted "Call him Doc!"

Seven of his albums won Grammy awards; his eighth Grammy was a lifetime achievement award in 2004. He also received the National Medal of the Arts from President Bill Clinton in 1997.

"There may not be a serious, committed baby boomer alive who didn't at some point in his or her youth try to spend a few minutes at least trying to learn to pick a guitar like Doc Watson," Clinton said at the time.

Doc Watson's son Merle began recording and touring with him in 1964. But Merle Watson died at age 36 in a 1985 tractor accident, sending his father into deep grief and making him consider retirement. Instead, he kept playing and started Merlefest, an annual musical event in Wilkesboro, N.C., that raises money for a community college there and celebrates "traditional plus" music.

"When Merle and I started out we called our music 'traditional plus,' meaning the traditional music of the Appalachian region plus whatever other styles we were in the mood to play," Doc Watson is quoted as saying on the festival's website. "Since the beginning, the people of the college and I have agreed that the music of MerleFest is 'traditional plus.'"

Doc Watson has said that when Merle died, he lost the best friend he would ever have.

He also relied on his wife, Rosa Lee, whom he married in 1947.

"She saw what little good there was in me, and there was little," Watson told the AP in 2000. "I'm awful glad she cared about me, and I'm awful glad she married me."

In a PBS NewsHour interview before a January appearance in Arlington, Va., Watson recalled his father teaching him how to play harmonica to a tune his parents had sung in church, as well as his first bus trip to New York City. Telling the stores in a folksy manner, he broke into a quiet laugh at various points. He said he still enjoyed touring.

"I love music and love a good audience and still have to make a living," Watson said. "Why would I quit?"

Musician Sam Bush, who has performed at every Merlefest, began touring with Doc and Merle Watson in 1974, occasionally substituting for Merle when he couldn't travel.

"I would sit next to Doc, and I would be influenced by his incredible timing and taste," Bush said after Watson's recent surgery. "He seems to always know what notes to play. They're always the perfect notes. He helped me learn the space between the notes (are) as valuable as the ones you play."

Bush said he was also intimidated when he began playing with the man he calls "the godfather of all flatpickers."

"But Doc puts you at ease about that kind of stuff," Bush said. "I never met a more generous kind of musician. He is more about the musical communication than showing off with hot licks."

His blindness didn't hold him back musically or at home.

Joe Newberry, a musician and spokesman for the N.C. Department of Cultural Resources, remembered once when his wife called the Watson home. Rosa Lee Watson said her husband was on the roof, replacing shingles. His daughter Nancy Watson said her father built the family's utility shed.

Guitarist Pete Huttlinger of Nashville, Tenn., said Doc Watson made every song his own, regardless of its age. 'He's one of those lucky guys," said Huttlinger, who studied Watson's methods when he first picked up a guitar. "When he plays something, he puts his stamp on it ? it's Doc Watson."

He changed folk music forever by adapting fiddle tunes to guitar at amazing tempos, Huttlinger said. "And people all over the place were trying to figure out how to do this," he said. "But Doc, he set the bar for everyone. He said, 'This is how it goes.' And people have been trying for years to match that.

"He took it (the guitar) out of the background and brought it upfront as a melody instrument. We're no longer at the back of the class. He gave the front to us."

Wayne Martin, executive director of the North Carolina Arts Council, said recently that Watson took southern Appalachian forms of music such as balladry, old-time string music and bluegrass, and made them accessible.

"He takes old music and puts his own creativity on it," Martin said. "It retained its core, yet it felt relevant to people today."

Said Bush: "I don't think anyone personifies what we call Americana more than Doc Watson."

Flipboard Planning To Release Android Beta For Everyone Who Doesn?t Have A Galaxy S III

flipdroidOne of the nice little surprises at Samsung's Galaxy S III unveiling in London was that the device would be preloaded with the fabled Android version of the Flipboard social magazine app. The news came from out of the blue -- while the iOS version has garnered plenty of acclaim and some nifty new updates, Android users were (largely) left out in the cold. Now it appears that the app will soon be finding its way onto other Android devices, but perhaps not in the way that most users would hope. According to a new report from Engadget, the Flipboard team is close to releasing a beta version of the app to a small number of users to gain critical feedback before launching the final product.

Tom Barrett Campaign Flooded With Calls After Spam Text Messages Label Mayor 'Union Puppet'

WASHINGTON -- The phones at Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett's (D) gubernatorial campaign headquarters were clogged all day Tuesday after an unsolicited text message went out to cell phones accusing Barrett of being a "union puppet" and telling Wisconsinites to call his office and complain.

The message, from "WI@obamasaliar.com," read: "Tom Barrett is a Union Puppet who will give Union Thugs everything they want. Call & ask why 414-271-8050." The number goes to Barrett's office.

View an image of the message, passed along to The Huffington Post by a Wisconsin source:

Barrett spokesman Phil Walzak said the calls began Tuesday morning. The phones in the office were operational, but "clogged" during the day. The calls continued into Tuesday evening. Walzak blamed the campaign of Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker (R) and his allies.

"We know that someone is playing a dirty trick on Tom Barrett. It has to be either Gov. Walker or an ally of Gov. Walker who is behind this," "Walzak said. "The sole purpose is to disrupt this office's operations. ... We have been able to complete our tasks and continue moving our ball down the field with no problem, despite this attempt at a disruption."

Ciara Matthews, spokeswoman for Walker's campaign, called Walzak's accusation "ridiculous." She said the first the governor's campaign heard of the text message was from the media. The campaign also started receiving random calls -- from Wisconsinites who believed the Walker campaign was behind the texts and wanted to complain or compliment.

"Once again, Tom Barrett and his campaign, with absolutely no evidence to back up their claim, is making an outrageous accusation of Gov. Walker and his campaign," said Matthews. "This is a complete figment of their imagination. Our campaign had absolutely nothing to do with these text messages. We don't know where they came from, or who is behind them. This is becoming habitual for the Barrett campaign. Something happens that they don't like, and they just make an accusation out of the blue."

Daniel Bice of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reported that one woman who received the message said that all the members of her family who have Sprint phone service received the text.

Walzak told The Huffington Post that the campaign heard from a significant number of Democrats and Barrett supporters who received the message and were "fired up even more as a result of these dirty tricks."

Scott Goodstein was the external online director for Obama for America and is founder of Revolution Messaging, a progressive strategy firm that has been working to expose text-message spamming in political campaigns. His group is running a petition opposing the tactic.

"Each year we see technology used to encourage people to get out the vote," he said. "Sadly these innovations end up in the hands of evil when the stakes are high. What we started during the Obama '08 campaign, to use opted-in text messaging to increase voter participation, has quickly been sabotaged by the right-wingers that conduct voter suppression through the very same mobile gateway. These spam text messages should be stopped and we need the public to speak out against this spam tactic. This is no different than auto-calls being used in the early 90s to increase turnout. ... These spam text messages are even worse -- because not only are they annoying and misleading, they actually cost consumers money to receive the SMS."

Voters go to the polls on June 5 for the recall election.

Children in poverty 'lost' to education system | Stuff.co.nz

JESSICA TASMAN-JONES

At least 1000 Auckland children are "lost" to the education system with 70 per cent of youth offenders not engaged with school at all, a new report reveals.

Poverty is so bad some children are growing up sharing small homes with other families - one family to a room.

The sad findings are contained in a report to Mayor Len Brown, called The Children and Young People of Auckland, which includes insights from a Youth Court judge, the office of the Children's Commissioner and youth panels and advocacy groups.

It will be used to develop an action plan for Auckland's children and young people to be completed by the end of this year.
The results of deprivation are acutely seen in the justice system, according to principal Youth Court Judge Andrew Becroft, with most serious youth offenders from pockets of a "third generational, permanent underclass".

"Those who appear in the Youth Court share distressingly similar characteristics and we must not shrink from naming them," he states.

Most come from family dysfunction where there is no positive male role model and 79 per cent have a history of abuse and neglect.

He said non-enrolment rather than truancy is a common theme with 70 per cent not engaged with school or education in any way.

In Auckland he claims at least 1000 young people are "lost" to the education system.

Youth Court judges, he said, rarely see children who have strong connections to family, education, peers and their community. They hardly ever see youth who are involved in sport, cultural groups, youth groups or waka ama.

New Zealand has one of the highest rates of child poverty in the OECD with 18 per cent of children living under the bread line.

The report acknowledges many Auckland children grow up happy and healthy, but there are populations of significant deprivation, most notably in Maori and Pacific populations.

Children account for about a third of the city's population.

In 2012, 68 per cent of the city's Pacific students and 52 per cent of Maori went to decile 1,2 and 3 schools. This compared with 4.5 per cent of European children.

The report said Auckland's socio-spatial division is so significant "different groups of people are less likely to know or even talk to each other, making it difficult to share a common vision for the region's future".

Research completed last year, details the conditions children attending decile one and two schools experience at home.

Almost every school provided breakfast or lunch to some or all of their students as some parents were too ashamed to send their children to school without the food they could not afford.

Home grown research shows children born to poor families are more likely to be poor themselves, something which is mirrored in problems with illiteracy.

Alison Sutton, strategic analyst of the City of Manukau Education Trust (COMET), reports inter-generational learning programmes are producing positive outcomes in families where parents have little reading ability.

These build adult's skills with the intention they can then support their children's learning while at the same time improving their own employability.

Early childhood education produces children who are more likely to succeed at school right through to their teenage years.

However, there are not enough early childhood centres for every three to four year old child in Auckland.

According to Sutton COMET is addressing this problem by streamlining council approval processes for early childhood centres and pioneering the use of council land in deprivation areas.

According to the 2006 census 288,573 children aged up to 14 lived in Auckland. A further 198,477 aged 15-24.

In the outer suburbs children and their families are more prolific, particularly in the west and south of the city.

In the Mangere-Otahuhu ward almost half the entire population is children and young people.

It is estimated that approximately 10% of the worldwide population today suffers from some form of eczema, and so if you are looking into how to cure eczema today, you are definitely not alone. The fact is that eczema can range in severity from bothersome to downright unbearable, and most doctors do recommend steroid creams as a treatment. Many, however, do not want to apply steroids to their bodies on a regular basis, and so the desire to find a natural solution is a popular one.

The Symptoms

If you want to know how to cure eczema naturally, you no doubt are very aware of the symptoms associated with this skin condition. Essentially, this is an inflammation of the skin that is characterized by redness, itching, dryness, flaking or scaling skin patches, and more. Sometimes these patches may ooze or bleed with severe cases, and this can result in scarring. It is common to see these symptoms on all parts of the body, but the appendages are especially prone to eczema rashes. Many times these symptoms may be caused by weather changes and exposure to allergens, but other causes include genetics, exposure to mites, and health conditions like celiac disease.

How to Cure Eczema Through Avoidance

If you want to know how to cure eczema without the use of steroids, you may find that paying attention to which factors worsen your condition is critical. While not all cases are caused by environmental factors, you may find that paying attention to weather changes, the foods you eat, exposure to certain allergens, and more can help you to pinpoint any environmental factors that make your condition worse. Knowing this information can be critical in making decisions in your life to avoid exposure to such elements when possible, or otherwise to begin natural treatments soon with regards to weather changes.

How to Cure Eczema Naturally

Of course, even with the best preventive efforts, flare ups may continue to occur from time to time, and so you will want to know how to cure eczema naturally through over the counter or common ingredients. You can take some ingredients internally as a health supplement like Virgin Coconut Oil, Grape Juice, Fish Oils, or Lauric Acid with great results, or you can apply other options topically like colloidal oatmeal cream or coconut butter lotion. These are best used immediately following a bath when skin is still moist. You can also apply castor oil mixed with calendula extract or soak in an oatmeal or kelp bath.

You should keep in mind that if you want to know how to cure eczema naturally, it is often not a specific method that works best for someone but rather a complete approach that may include avoidance as well as baths, supplements, and lotions or creams. These options can often be used with great results in combination with each other for a complete approach to both easing symptoms and preventing new flare ups from developing, too. This is often a great alternative to steroid treatments.

Elusive quasiparticles realized

ScienceDaily (May 23, 2012) ? In quantum physics physical processes in condensed matter and other many-body systems can often be described with quasiparticles. In Innsbruck, for the first time Rudolf Grimm's team of physicists has succeeded in experimentally realizing a new quasiparticle -- a repulsive polaron -- in an ultracold quantum gas.

The scientists have published their results in the online issue of the journal Nature.

Ultracold quantum gases are an ideal experimental model system to simulate physical phenomena in condensed matter. In these gases, many-body states can be realized under highly controlled conditions and interactions between particles are highly tuneable. A research group led by Wittgenstein awardee Rudolf Grimm and START awardee Florian Schreck have now realized and comprehensively analyzed repulsive polarons for the first time. The scientists from the Institute of Quantum Optics and Quantum Information (IQOQI) of the Austrian Academy of Sciences and the Institute for Experimental Physics of the University of Innsbruck are international leaders in this field of research.

Elusive partners

To realize repulsive polarons experimentally, Rudolf Grimm and his research team produce an ultracold quantum gas consisting of lithium and potassium atoms in a vacuum chamber. They control particle interaction with electromagnetic fields, and by applying radio-frequency pulses they then drive the potassium atoms into a state where they repulse the surrounding lithium atoms. This complex state can be described physically as quasiparticle because, in various ways, it behaves like a new particle with modified properties. By analyzing the whole energy spectrum of the system, the researchers were able to demonstrate repulsive polarons.

"This way we were able to realize and analyze not only attractive but also repulsive polarons," says Prof Grimm. While attractive polarons have been studied before, the quantum physicist and his team have entered a completely new scientific field with these novel repulsive quasiparticles.

Ideal observation platform

In condensed matter these quasiparticles decay very quickly, which makes it nearly impossible to study them. But also in quantum gases the repulsive properties present difficulties: "Polarons can only exist in a metastable state," explains Rudolf Grimm "and their lifetime is crucial for our ability to investigate them at all. We were surprised to find that our polarons showed an almost ten times increased lifetime compared to earlier experiments in similar systems. Our experimental set-up, therefore, provides an ideal platform for a detailed analysis of many-body states that rely on repulsive interactions."

As a next step the Innsbruck researchers are going to investigate whether separate domains where only lithium or only potassium atoms accumulate are created in a quantum gas consisting of repulsive particles. "This has been suggested in theoretical models but only now we will are able to investigate it experimentally."

The experiment was carried out in close cooperation with two theoretical physicists from Denmark and Spain and is financially supported by the Austrian Science Fund within the Special Research Program FoQuS.

Sex and the church: U.S. congregations struggle with gay, lesbian ...

A Pentecostal pastor lays down a saw at a residence for homeless people with AIDS, raps on wood and expresses pride in being able to look out in his church and see two pews filled with people with HIV.

A retired Episcopalian schoolteacher in her 80s, with a shawl over the shoulders of her barely 5-foot frame, describes a series of religious visions at 3 a.m. that led her to start an AIDS hospice.

Men in crew-cuts embrace a colorfully dressed gay man as part of a care team at a block-long Southern Baptist church in Texas.

These stories and images come to mind looking back 20 years when, amid widespread suffering caused by the AIDS crisis, many religious communities found themselves working through a response balancing traditional teaching on sexuality, fear of the unknown and the commands of their faith to love their neighbor.

Today, as President Obama comes forward to support same-sex marriage, many religious communities find themselves undergoing similar challenges balancing theology, experience and personal consciences on issues of sexuality.

Extremists continue to judge and condemn one another, and the vitriol may ramp up as the issue becomes part of the 2012 election. But new research offers a cautionary note for those who would try to fit members of different religious groups into monolithic boxes on gay and lesbian issues.

In interviews with 40 Christian clergy, researchers from Brandeis University and Clemson University found many pastoral leaders were still developing their opinions on sexuality and how they would respond to requests for ceremonies such as same-sex blessings.

Other studies show evolving attitudes among evangelicals and younger religious adults as the debate shifts away from theological forums and into the public arena.

In the pews and in the pulpits, U.S. religious groups continue to struggle with sex.

Theology and practice

There have been significant shifts in public opinion in recent years in support of same-sex marriage; still, there are signs that religious individuals in general are not leading the way.

For example, the 2010 Baylor Religion Survey found that while 88 percent of religiously unaffiliated respondents supported same-sex marriage, support from Christian groups ranged from 45 percent of Catholics to 37 percent of evangelicals.

In studying data from the 2006-2007 National Congregations Study, ?researcher Andrew Whitehead of the University of Mobile reported that Catholic, mainline Protestant and politically and theologically liberal congregations were more likely to accept gays and lesbians in their churches.

Overall, however, many churches are not welcoming. Whitehead said 37 percent of congregations allowed gays and lesbians in committed relationships to become members, with around one in five allowing those members to hold leadership posts.

The results indicate ?the access of gays and lesbians to religious congregations is clearly limited,? he writes in the latest edition of the Review of Religious Research.

But attitudes are not set in stone.

A separate study examines the uncertainty experienced by pastors as they come to terms with issues from above ? denominational stands on homosexuality; from below ? the expectations and views of church members; and from within ?? their own developing understanding of same-sex issues.

In-depth interviews with 40 clergy from Catholic, Episcopal, Southern Baptist and United Church of Christ congregations revealed that seven in 10 pastoral leaders said they were unsure about their personal opinions on homosexuality, how they should act in pastoral settings relative to the issue, or uncertain about both their views and actions.

The sense of being on a journey crossed denominational lines, researchers Wendy Cadge, Jennifer Girouard, Laura Olson and Madison Lylerohr reported in the Review of Religious Research.

One Southern Baptist pastor said, ?I?m on a journey with God. What I believe today about this issue I may not be believing tomorrow ? as I continue down the pathway of maturity.?

A United Church of Christ minister said he looks to Scripture, science and his own experience and finds issues around homosexuality ?terribly complicated and challenging. ? This is one of the questions of our day that we will for the rest of our lives continue to struggle with.?

Still, as public opinion shifts to be more supportive of gay rights, and doctrinal mandates hold less sway over younger generations, a perceptible shift in attitudes also is occurring in religious communities, some researchers state.

The journey continues

In a study of 665 Christian heterosexual students at a Midwestern university, 85 percent of students said their religion?s core teaching views homosexuality as a sin. But fewer than four in 10 respondents said their own beliefs about homosexuality were fairly consistent with the teachings of their religion, researchers Michael Woodford, Denise Levy and N. Eugene Walls said in article in the Review of Religious Research.

In a separate review article looking ?Beyond the Culture War,? researchers Jeremy Thomas and Daniel Olson of Purdue University note that more evangelical congregations can expect to face these issues ?as America?s growing acceptance of?homosexuality makes it likely more church members will be open about their sexual orientation.

Gays and lesbians ?unwilling to sell their evangelical souls? to affirm their orientation will be coming out at a time when a growing number of churches are seeking to find ways to share values such as unconditional love, commitment, stability and monogamy within the context of how gays and lesbian members lead their lives, according to Thomas.

In these congregations, the focus is shifting to the idea that ?We?re here to help. We?re here to minister,? Thomas said.

Overall, new research is providing a more nuanced understanding of how many people in various religious communities, far from being rigid ideologues on the issue, are struggling to find ways to move forward.

This brings back to mind a conversation I had many years ago with a priest involved in AIDS ministry.? Back then, some AIDS activists disrupted Masses and destroyed sacred hosts as they demanded that religious groups give unqualified acceptance of homosexuality.? And some preachers filled the airwaves with the message that AIDS was God?s punishment for homosexuals and drug users.

The cleric said what was needed was conciliation, the ability to seek forgiveness from one another for being judgmental.

What if today more Americans, instead of promoting polarization over dialogue on the issue of same-sex marriage, decided to forgive one another for the times they chose vitriol over compassion and respect for individual consciences on both sides.

Maybe then the nation could journey together toward greater understanding. Not a bad American dream.
