Three Girls and a Mic ? Pockets Hurting: Paying for College

Everyone always stresses college to you. It used to be an option, but now, according to society it?s a requirement. Now you would think since in today?s world since you have to have a college degree that institutions would make it affordable but NO SIR! Filling out online scholarships seems hopeless because you almost never get them no matter how many you fill out and the government tries to help but the money they give you isn?t nearly enough!! I?m always stressing about how to pay for school and what loans I can pull out that won?t send me plummeting into debt with high interest rates but alas, I have failed.

As I was browsing through the Washington Post?s website I found an article that explained the different ways for which parents pay for school and unbeknownst to me grants and subsidized loans aren?t the only way. Apparently parents are using credit card, home equity, tuition installment plans?.the list goes on. Now I definitely think I found some alternatives as opposed to taking high interest loans but either way it goes it looks as if most of us we?ll become slaves to the debt we?ll acquire in college. Read for yourself:

Tuition Installment Plans

Interest Rate: None

Some 90% of colleges offer these plans, which allow families to spread tuition payments over nine to 12 months, according to the National Association of College and University Business Officers, which represents chief financial officers at nonprofit public and private colleges. Most plans don?t charge interest, though many levy an enrollment fee of $40 to $75 or more.

Zero-Interest Loans

Interest Rate: None

As college endowments bounce back from their financial-crisis lows, some schools are lending money to students with rates as low as 0%, says Justin Draeger, president of the National Association of Student Financial Aid Administrators. Schools, eager to attract students, can include these loans in their financial-aid letters.

Home Equity

Interest Rate: About 3% to 6%

Tapping home equity to pay for college can be relatively cheap. Rates on home-equity loans and lines of credit average about 6.4% and 5.1%, respectively, according to Bankrate.com.

And that?s before the tax breaks. Homeowners can take an itemized deduction for the interest paid on home-equity debt of up to $100,000 used for any purpose, including college. The higher one?s tax bracket, the bigger the advantage likely will be. However, for tax filers who are subject to the alternative minimum tax, home-equity interest deductions are allowed only when that debt is spent on home improvements.

?

Credit Cards

Interest Rate: 0% during introductory period

Parents who know they will be able to pay tuition bills soon?for instance, if they are expecting a bonus or tax refund?might want to consider using a credit card that has a 0% promotional interest rate.

The average length of 0% periods on purchases ran nearly 10 months during the second quarter, up from about eight months a year prior, according to CardHub.com, a credit-card comparison site. For example, Citigroup?s Simplicity and Diamond Preferred credit cards offer 0% rates for 18 months.

?

Life Insurance

Interest Rate: 4% to 5.5%

?Permanent? life-insurance policies combine a death benefit with a tax-advantaged investment account, and policyholders can borrow cash from the policies to pay for various expenses. Parents can take loans from such policies to cover tuition bills.

Interest rates on these loans, which can be fixed or variable, typically range from 4% to 5.5%, says Scott Moffitt, a college-planning consultant in Cincinnati. That?s lower than most federal and private student loans.

?

Alternative Loan Sources

Interest Rate: Varies

Since last year, a small number of start-ups have launched offering loans to students.

This month, SoFi, based in San Francisco, began making loans to undergraduates at 45 colleges, including New York University, Northwestern University and the University of California, Los Angeles. Alumni of those institutions fund the loans.

The interest rates are fixed at 6.49%, and they can drop to 5.99% upon graduation. Loan payments can be deferred until six months after graduation, though interest begins accruing while the borrower is in school.

Benefits of Community & Charitable Team Building Events : killpak ...

Team building events are specially tailored to unify your work force through all sorts of activities. Over the years, innovative charitable and community team building activities have gained in popularity thanks to the wide range of benefits generated, not only to your business and its employees but also to your local community.

If you like the idea of community and charitable team building activities then look no further as that is exactly what this article is all about. There are countless benefits that these types of team building events provide. From my point of view these type of charity focused events are the most beneficial and complete team building activities currently available.

Why Community Team Building Events are so valuable?

Because they benefit you, your employees and your community. In addition to providing your team with a valuable team bonding experience these events provide real tangible benefits to a wide range of charitable, community and voluntary organisations.

With that in mind, I would like to highlight the real benefits that these type of team building events bring in three specific areas ? Business Benefits, Community Benefits and Employee Benefits.

Business Benefits of Community Team Building Events

* Charitable and community team building events provide a practical solution to help your company meet its social responsibilities. * By providing real life experiences they motivate your employees by achieving tasks of real value. * Enhance your brand awareness and develop better public relations through working in you local community. * Effective vehicle to develop team and personal growth. Working to support worthy causes and benefit others is one the most rewarding and unifying tasks a team can undertake. * Powerful tool for enhancing communication skills, team work and problem solving through real life situations.

Community Benefits of Community Team Building Events

As the name suggests these types of activities provide support to the community with projects that are in most need of help. Prior to undertaking a community or charitable team building event, try to identify a charity or worthy cause that you feel reflects your values and then speak to your event management company and let them take care of the rest.

Such events often encourage your employees to get involved in other volunteering activities within the local community which helps provide a longer term benefit too.

But above all these activities will provide a valuable link between your business and its neighbourhood as well as local community organisations.

Employee Benefits of Community Team Building Events

Your employees will have an opportunity to support and become involved in worthy causes within their own community. Working with real life experiences helps them develop unique personals skills that will have wider benefits in your business.

Community team building events are not only focused on raising awareness to the local community they also open the eyes of your employees to wider community and global issues.

Working with colleagues outside the work place and in their own local community is a priceless experience that brings many benefits and helps to develop personal skills.

And the reason why it?s so important to hire an event management company is to ensure that the project is managed safely and effectively, meets your specific requirements and provides the team with a fully packaged event that not only helps bond and develop but also benefits a worthy cause in the community.

External ills imperil tropical reserves

Impacts outside parks drive poor health within

Web edition : 1:52 pm

One of the first broad looks at how well tropical reserves protect biodiversity has found that while some are relatively stable, others are in decline due to conditions just beyond their borders.

Logging, deforestation and fires just outside a park had strong effects on a reserve?s health, whereas factors such as air and water pollution were less significant, new research finds. ?These parks are like imperfect mirrors,? says team leader William Laurance, an ecologist at James Cook University in Cairns, Australia. ?They?re partially reflecting what?s going on around them.?

Laurance and nearly 200 coauthors report the findings online July 25 in?Nature.?Their study, which surveyed 60 reserves across 36 nations, ?is shining some of the first light on something that we?ve talked about for quite a while,? says Lucas Joppa, a conservation biologist at Microsoft Research in Cambridge, England, who was not involved in the work. ?It?s the first crack at an extremely important problem.?

Park managers and other officials may now be able to use the information to help figure out where to deploy their limited time and money, Laurance says. ?Protected areas are our best bet for conserving nature into the future,? he says, ?and we have to find ways to make them work as well as we possibly can.?

Many scientists have looked at how individual nature reserves have fared, or at how specific animals or plants have done across regions. Laurance and his colleagues decided to search instead for broad trends across large groups of organisms in the tropics, the world?s most biodiverse region.

The researchers identified and interviewed four to five expert field biologists for each site ? people who averaged nearly two decades? worth of mud on their boots. In detailed questionnaires and interviews, the local experts reported trends in 31 animal and plant groups. The researchers also asked about 21 potential drivers of ecosystem change such as illegal mining, hunting and selective logging.

After cross-checking the experts? knowledge with published scientific literature, Laurance?s group came up with a ?reserve-health index.? About four-fifths of the reserves had a declining index. The drop in about half of all reserves was relatively serious. ?What?s most striking is just how sweeping the changes were,? says Laurance.

The next step, Joppa says, is to calculate the actual impact of protected areas ? how conditions would have changed had the nature reserve never been set up. ?That?s what we really want to know,? he says.

Elder Abuse: What It Is and What You Can Do About It | Remain At ...

Although it is perhaps not as publicized as child abuse, abuse of the elderly is just as serious and just as troubling.

According to the National Center on Elder Abuse, elder abuse covers both intentional abuse (physical and emotional) and unintentional abuse (negligence) by a trusted individual. Studies report that more than 10 percent of the elderly in the United States have been the victim of abuse, representing some 6 million cases. Still other studies indicate that many incidents are under-identified and under-reported, with as few as 1 in 14 cases reaching the attention of authorities.

Brian Carrigan
Founder & CEO

Statistics show that females and ?older? elders are the most common targets of abuse, and many victims are reluctant to report they?ve been abused for a variety of reasons: embarrassment (especially if the abuse comes at the hand of a family member); fear of being moved from their home to a care facility or nursing home; guilt and denial; and the fear that if abuse is reported, the situation will get even worse.

Senior abuse can also take the form of financial exploitation. Abusers help themselves to ?loans? or ?gifts? from a senior?s bank account, with the victim often unaware of the crime.

HelpGuide.org gives a clear list of the warning signs to look for in order to recognize physical abuse: unexplained evidence of injury (bruises, welts, or scars); broken bones, sprains or dislocations; drug overdoses or irregular uses of medication; broken eyeglasses or frames; signs of restraint; torn clothes; and a caregiver?s refusal to allow people to see the victim alone.

Signs of emotional abuse can include the following behaviors by a caregiver: threatening, belittling, or controlling behavior and language. Victims themselves often exhibit behavior which on the surface looks like dementia: rocking, sucking, or mumbling.

Thankfully, help is readily available. If abuse within the home is suspected, it should be reported to local law enforcement authorities and, in Athens-Clarke County, to the Adult Protective Services unit of the Department of Family and Children Services (706-227-7000). If abuse is suspected within a nursing home or personal care facility, it should be reported to the Long-Term Care Ombudsman in the state?s Division of Aging Services (800-474-7540).

Our elderly friends, neighbors, and family members are precious. Abuse of any kind is a crime. It is vital that we take whatever steps necessary to keep everyone in our community safe.

An aspect which is allied with the latter are the visualisation of uniform patterns. Uniforms are fundamental to a business just like advertisements; however, unlike advertisements, they can be worked-out under a low-cost financial plan. In the process of design creation, it should be understood that there are particular aspects which need a more in depth concentration like the colour and overall pattern or structure. Work uniforms should not be used for granted because they are not mere clothing pieces which one wears to work; it is a depiction of the business where the employee works.

The following concepts can aid in appreciating the key aspects better.

Logo- this often contains the company name or the symbol which embodies its vision as well as mission; hence, it represents the company as a whole. However, the location and the size are often being taken for granted; it?s important to keep in mind that before printing or embroidering a logo, a tactic ought to be practiced since a uniform can also be a form of advertising.

Structure/ Design- customized apparel are known to allow companies to be creative in the design of the different work uniforms. In line with this, it should be understood that the overall structure of the clothing should not be compromised as a result of excessive imagination. Every piece should still be able to exemplify the company?s general identity.

The colour- is another main feature that should never be taken for granted due to the fact that it covers the majority of the office wear or uniform being planned. It also stands-out from the rest of the parts; hence, making it more noteworthy to people who see it.

Interesting Aspect of Business Law | Hawaii Reporter

Richard Long

BY RICHARD LONG - Business law covers a very wide range of aspects and other laws. Just because some claims to not know a law does not excuse them. Society has laws in place to attempt to keep order in society. People need to follow those laws for obvious reasons. Not all governments in all countries practice the same laws, they are going to vary. So, for a person to say they did not know the law is inexcusable to say the least. One thing is sure and this is that the law is the law, no matter what country the person resides.

A good example of case in point is the arena of business law. When businesses are called on the carpet for questionable ethical practices it is the business law/commercial law that courts will look to. The main thing that business law does is to protect the business owner, shareholders, enterprises, employees, the business directors and the consumers.

This law covers corporation law or specific laws of the company on land and sea. Company laws, denotes the power of each individual and gives definitions of necessary rules. It will cover all aspects of fire, life and accident. It will define partnerships. Business laws will cover all rules all contracts, legal and or corporate. When businesses hire individuals to work interim or long-term employees business laws will sit aside guidelines. Business law will regulate laws in regards to consumer products and the selling of those products.

When students enter law school they are taught how to be an effective business lawyer and some of the course studies include, but are not limited to contracts, corporation laws, laws regarding securities, property laws, laws regarding taxes, pensions and employee benefits. It will cover estates and trust accounts. Labor laws are specifically important and are covered, along with employment laws. Laws regarding the filing of bankruptcy, antitrust laws, and immigration laws are of necessity for the business lawyer and employer to know.

If the words business law confuses one, just think of this law in another light, which would be any and all things that impact the running of a business. A business or corporation is not going to thrive without a business law to support it. If businesses did not have good business laws to support the running of companies then there would most likely be fraud, unfair business acts, dishonesty and deception towards employees and clients alike. But, because there are business laws set in place for employees, employers, and business clients, there are stiff laws and regulations that protect all aspects of the business or corporation.

As with anything there are always going to be amendments and changes and business law is not different. Recently in the news of business law such as in the State of Michigan for LLC's (Limited Liability Corporation) was amended to extend right of creditors. Creditors cannot sell membership interest, and liquidate assets of the LLC to satisfy debt. It also states that membership interest cannot be sold as personal property and the property cannot be foreclosed upon. This new law also makes it easier for companies to convert to an LLC and for the company to covert out of an LLC.

Rush Limbaugh Suggests 'Dark Knight Rises' Villain 'Bane' A Deliberate Romney Reference

Limbaugh Bane Dark Knight Rises Romney

Rush Limbaugh suggested on his program Tuesday that the choice of villain ("Bane") in the upcoming film "The Dark Knight Rises" was a politically motivated reference to Mitt Romney's Bain Capital.

Just a day after opining that President Barack Obama "hates" America, Rush Limbaugh found a new target in the eagerly anticipated "Dark Knight Rises," which he suggested during his program on Tuesday was part of a liberal media conspiracy:

RUSH: Have you heard this new movie, the Batman movie, what is it, The Dark Knight Lights Up or whatever the name is. That's right, Dark Knight Rises. Lights Up, same thing. Do you know the name of the villain in this movie? Bane. The villain in The Dark Knight Rises is named Bane, B-a-n-e. What is the name of the venture capital firm that Romney ran and around which there's now this make-believe controversy? Bain. The movie has been in the works for a long time. The release date's been known, summer 2012 for a long time. Do you think that it is accidental that the name of the really vicious fire breathing four eyed whatever it is villain in this movie is named Bane?

It might strike some as odd that Limbaugh would direct his vitriol toward a movie franchise whose wealthy vigilante hero arguably contradicts a number of progressive ideals -- even once using a form warrantless wiretapping to nab a villain. Limbaugh does acknowledge that the Bane character sounds more "like an Occupy Wall Street guy" than the financial engineers one might find at Bain Capital. He also points to a Washington Times Communities post that compares Batman to Mitt Romney. Nonetheless, Limbaugh spends several minutes pivoting between a heated critique of Barack Obama and an equally heated dissection of what he sees as the new Batman film's ulterior political motives.

So, anyway, this evil villain in the new Batman movie is named Bane. And there's now a discussion out there as to whether or not this is purposeful and whether or not it will influence voters. It's gonna have a lot of people. This movie, the audience is gonna be huge. A lot of people are gonna see the movie, and it's a lot of brain-dead people, entertainment, the pop culture crowd, and they're gonna hear Bane in the movie and they're gonna associate Bain. The thought is that when they start paying attention to the campaign later in the year, and Obama and the Democrats keep talking about Bain, Romney and Bain, that these people will think back to the Batman movie, "Oh, yeah, I know who that is." (laughing) There are some people who think it'll work. Others think you're really underestimating the American people to think that will work.

"You may think it's ridiculous," Limbaugh added in summation. "I'm just telling you this is the kind of stuff the Obama team is lining up."

Bane, who first appeared in comic-book form in 1993, was also featured in one previous Batman film, "Batman & Robin." His inclusion in the "The Dark Knight Rises" was announced early in 2011, at which point Mitt Romney was just one of many Republicans vying for his party's nomination.

You can find to the entire Limbaugh segment below (via Mediaite):
