The Different Techniques Of Curing Substance Addiction | Daily ...

Drug treatment centers cater the needs of various addicts with various addiction problems. Severe addictions need long-term therapy in an inpatient setting while some addicts find the twelve-step program and counseling enough.

Treatment options may include residential treatment programs, out-patient treatment programs, pharmacotherapy and psychotherapy. Consulting a psychotherapist or doctor is a must for people who want to defeat drug abuse.

In-Patient Treatment

The National Institute on Drug Abuse revealed that patients admitted in residential drug treatment programs have higher percentage of recovery. Treatment stay in the therapeutic community can range from one month to one year depending upon the case of the patient. These communities aim to eliminate the drug addiction to the patient?s mindset and replacing it with a drug free lifestyle. This kind of treatment option provides great help for those who suffer addiction for a very long time. Reintegration to community is the main objective of this treatment.

Twelve-Step Programs

It is a great help for addicts if they join self-help groups such as Narcotic Anonymous in maintaining recovery. Most sufferers need more support and are advised to attend drug rehab treatment. This self-help group is found useful after rehabilitation. The key to success of joining Narcotic Anonymous is the co-operation of members to impact on each other?s lives. They progress in their recovery by regularly attending the meetings and through the aid of a peer sponsor. The patients are encouraged to follow individual spiritual principles to guide their lives. According to studies, members of Narcotic Anonymous achieve complete recovery in a span of nine years.

Counseling and Psychotherapy

The goal of these therapies is to let patients understand their drug abuse, the disadvantages and the reason why they utilize the drugs. It also helps addicts gain coping skills to live a sober life. Psychotherapy changes the behavior and thinking of the patients which plays a vital role in helping clients live drug- free lives. Counselling also deals with past pain and trauma that may be the cause of the addiction. This treatment focuses on the psychological cause and treatment of addiction but patients need more than counseling and psychotherapy to get the drugs out of the system of the addicts.

Pharmacotherapy

Prescribed drugs are used to ease the withdrawal symptoms often experienced by patients who are on detoxification. Detoxification is the process of taking the addictive chemical substances away from the body of the patient. In addition to the medicines used for narcotics addiction, the National Institute on Drug Abuse researchers are finding the right medications for the detoxification of stimulants.

Analysis: Ryan pick sets clear November choice

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Mitt Romney's pick of Rep. Paul Ryan for the Republican presidential ticket brings clarity to the stark election-year choice for voters ? the competing Democratic and GOP visions about the size and role of the federal government in Americans' lives.

Ryan is synonymous with his revolutionary budget that slashes spending for safety-net programs for the poor, remakes Medicare and cuts personal and corporate taxes while pushing the deficit down to a manageable level. It turns the tea party dream of a scaled-back, less involved government into hard-core reality.

"America is more than just a place ... it's an idea. It's the only country founded on an idea," Ryan said Saturday in Virginia as Romney introduced his vice presidential choice. "Our rights come from nature and God, not government. We promise equal opportunity, not equal outcomes."

With Romney's embrace of Ryan, it is now the Romney-Ryan budget and blueprint for the future.

President Barack Obama, who repeatedly talks up the November election as a profound choice for the country, has rejected the Ryan approach as "thinly veiled social Darwinism." The Democrat and former community organizer sees government as a place with enough resources to help the less fortunate.

The Ryan budget, Obama said in April, "is antithetical to our entire history as a land of opportunity and upward mobility for everybody who's willing to work for it; a place where prosperity doesn't trickle down from the top but grows outward from the heart of the middle class."

Roughly three months before the election, Romney's choice clearly defines the fault lines and establishes the narrative for the election, one that Republicans and Democrats, liberals and tea partyers will echo in congressional and gubernatorial races. The outcome in November will have far-reaching implications for looming fiscal crises in the year's final days.

On the grassroots level, the selection of the 42-year-old Ryan, one of the House's intellectual conservatives and Budget Committee chairman, energizes a GOP base wary of the Massachusetts governor and architect of the state's health insurance program dubbed Romneycare.

Conservatives, from The Wall Street Journal editorial page to the rank and file, had been clamoring in recent days for Ryan. The timing of the announcement came as polls showed Obama with a narrow advantage and the number of undecided voters diminishing, underscoring the need for Romney to act fast.

"It's absolutely fantastic," Sal Russo, a longtime Republican operative and founder of the Tea Party Express, a well-funded wing of the populist movement, said in an interview. "He's willing to go out there and tackle tough issues. The American people want somebody to make the tough choices."

Russo said his organization had polled its 17,000 members, and Ryan and freshman Sen. Marco Rubio of Florida were the favorites for the No. 2 spot on the GOP ticket.

The conservative reward of Ryan also carries a significant political risk ? and Democrats wasted no time in making it a top talking point.

The Ryan budget would scrap the current Medicare system that the nation's seniors have enjoyed for decades in favor of a voucher program for those under 55 today. Starting in 10 years, the plan also calls for gradually raising the Medicare retirement age from 65 to 67.

Democrats immediately sounded the alarm about the implications of changing the popular entitlement program, a warning certain to resonate in battleground states such as Florida, Iowa and Pennsylvania ? states with the heaviest concentration of those 65 and over.

"In selecting Paul Ryan, Mitt Romney has crystalized the contrast of this election," said Rod Smith, chairman of the Florida Democratic Party. "Ryan is the architect of Romney's extreme budget plan which would end Medicare as we know it, increasing the healthcare costs for Florida's seniors by thousands every year."

The state's Democratic Sen. Bill Nelson, who faces a stiff challenge in his bid for another term, quickly posted on Facebook.

"Romney VP pick bad for seniors. Signals an end to Medicare as we know it. My commitment to Medicare never stronger," Nelson said.

Democrats are certain to replay past Republican criticism of the Ryan budget.

Newt Gingrich, the former House speaker and one-time Republican presidential candidate, referred to Ryan's plan to overhaul Medicare as "right-wing social engineering." He later apologized.

Florida Rep. Connie Mack, who hopes to win the Republican Senate nomination Tuesday, said in April of the Ryan budget: "You know that budget was a joke, doesn't balance the budget for years." An aide later clarified that Mack was referring to the voting process in which Republican-passed legislation in the House goes nowhere in the Democratic-controlled Senate.

Mack's deficit-cutting plan calls for cutting one penny from every federal dollar spent.

Republicans see Ryan, a Catholic from Wisconsin who could appeal to blue-collar voters, as an appealing complement to Romney, a Mormon and multimillionaire.

But Ryan has tangled with the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops and others in the church over his budget, which would cut Medicaid, food stamps, Pell Grants and a host of other programs that directly help the nation's poor.

Ryan had said the budget is based on Catholic social teaching. But in a letter, the Rev. Thomas J. Reese called that nonsense.

"I am afraid that Chairman Ryan's budget reflects the values of his favorite philosopher Ayn Rand rather than the gospel of Jesus Christ," said Reese, a Jesuit priest and senior fellow at the Woodstock Theological Center at Georgetown University. "Survival of the fittest may be OK for social Darwinists but not for followers of the gospel of compassion and love."

Romney insisted on Saturday that Ryan is intent on creating opportunities for all Americans.

"Paul is in public life for all the right reasons ? not to advance his personal ambitions but to advance the ideals of freedom and justice, and to increase opportunity and prosperity to people of every class and faith, every age and ethnic background," Romney said.

Dolphins' Chad Johnson out of jail on $2,500 bond

DAVIE, Fla. (AP) ? Chad Johnson's teammates were taking the field for practice at the Miami Dolphins' training camp just as he walked out of jail Sunday.

He missed the workout, and it's unclear whether he'll be back.

The six-time Pro Bowl receiver was released on $2,500 bond a day after his wife accused him of head-butting her during an argument in front of their home. Johnson was charged with simple domestic battery, a misdemeanor.

The confrontation came barely a month after Johnson married Evelyn Lozada, who is on the reality TV show "Basketball Wives."

Following practice, coach Joe Philbin said he had yet to meet with Johnson but would soon. Johnson, 34, has been battling for a spot on the team after a disappointing season with the New England Patriots in 2011.

"We're going to deal with this at the appropriate time," Philbin said. "We're not going to waste time. ... We're all in this thing together. Everybody that sets foot in this building, we're all held to a high standard."

Only five days earlier, Philbin said Johnson's roster spot could be in jeopardy if he didn't temper his freewheeling behavior. Johnson annoyed the coach by frequently using profanity during a session with reporters.

Johnson's defense attorney, Adam Swickle, said a no-contact order has been issued that prevents Johnson from contacting Lozada. Swickle declined to comment further.

Johnson ? who recently changed his name from Chad Ochocinco ? was arrested Saturday after Lozada confronted him about a receipt she found for a box of condoms, police said. According to an arrest affidavit, Lozada said she was taking groceries into their home when she found the receipt in the car trunk.

When the two were seated back in the car, they began talking about the receipt and their marriage. That's when Johnson got upset and head-butted his wife, the report said.

Lozada ran to a neighbor's house and called police. A responding officer said Lozada had a 3-inch cut on her forehead, according to the affidavit, while Johnson did not have any visible marks or bruises. When questioned by police, he confirmed there was an argument over the receipt, but said his wife had head-butted him.

Even before his arrest, Johnson was battling to salvage his career. He was released by the Patriots after totaling only 15 receptions last season. He dropped the lone pass thrown his way in the Dolphins' first exhibition game.

News of the arrest spread quickly Saturday, an off day for the team.

"I was shocked," tight end Charles Clay said. "Of course, you don't want things like that to happen."

Johnson has long been known for outlandish antics that annoyed his teammates as well as coaches, but in the wake of his arrest, several players expressed support for him.

"We're all there for him in this tough time," receiver Davone Bess said. "He has been busting his tail in the meetings and on the practice field, doing all the necessary things to make the team and do a good job. Stuff happens. We all run into situations. It's life."

Philbin, a first-year head coach, talked with his players about Johnson's arrest.

"I reminded them that on April 10 in our first team meetings, I said, 'Guys, I'd love to stand up here and tell you we're never going to have a problem here in Miami,'" Philbin said. "Do we want high-character guys? Yes. All 31 other coaches are going to say the same thing. But I specifically told them on April 10 that there will be problems that arise and you have to deal with them honestly and openly and directly. You've got to learn from mistakes and move on, and you can't hide from the problem."

If convicted, Johnson faces a maximum penalty of one year in jail and a $1,000 fine. He could also receive community service, probation or anger management classes.

Johnson was known as Ochocinco for the past four seasons but changed his name back to Johnson after his July 4 wedding. The name was a playful reference to his uniform No. 85.

Johnson and Lozada were prominent in the recent first episode of HBO's "Hard Knocks: Training Camp with the Miami Dolphins."

VH1's "Basketball Wives" is filmed in Miami and also features Shaunie O'Neal, the former wife of former NBA star Shaquille O'Neal. Lozada is the former fiancee of NBA player Antoine Walker.

Bolt leads 4x100 relay to world record at Olympics

LONDON (AP) ? Five things to know about Saturday, Day 15 of the London Olympics:

?Repeat performance: Bolt closes out world-record relay for Jamaica.

?Drive for five: Mighty US women win fifth straight Olympic basketball gold.

?Boudia wins diving title as United States closes in on medals table win.

?Mexico upsets Brazil to win men's soccer gold.

?The End: Coach K says gold-medal game will be final one as U.S. coach.

___

Usain Bolt and Ryan Bailey got the baton at almost exactly the same time Saturday night, then sped down the stretch for the final leg of the 4x100-meter relay.

When Bolt reached his top gear, it was over.

The World's Fastest Man powered Jamaica to a world-record time of 36.84 seconds, making him 3 for 3 for the second straight Olympics. He also won the 100 meters and 200 in London and Beijing.

Bolt picked up another victory long after the record-breaking relay was over. After grudgingly handing the baton to an official right after he crossed the finish line, he got it back about 40 minutes later. He responded with a bow of thanks and kissed his new memento.

Bailey and the United States got the silver in 37.04, matching the old record that Bolt helped set at last year's world championships. Trinidad and Tobago took the bronze in 38.12 after Canada, which was third across the line, was disqualified for running outside its lane.

Before Bolt and Co. took over the track, Mo Farah sent a charge through the capacity crowd at Olympic Stadium when he won the 5,000 meters to complete an Olympic long-distance double for Britain.

Farah surged ahead late and held on to win in 13:41.66. He still had the energy to do a few playful sit-ups on the track before he grabbed a British flag for the real celebration.

Allyson Felix won her third gold medal as the Americans rolled to an easy victory in the women's 4x400 relay, and Russia capped a big day with wins by Mariya Savinova in the women's 800 meters and Anna Chicherova in the women's high jump ? giving the traditional Olympic power six golds on the penultimate day of the games.

Caster Semenya of South Africa was right behind Savinova to earn a silver medal in her first Olympic final three years after being forced to undergo gender tests.

The U.S. women's basketball team entered the London Games with considerable expectations, and it lived up to the hype by winning its fifth straight Olympic gold medal.

Candace Parker scored 21 points as the Americans beat France 86-50 in the final. She had eight straight during the game-changing run in the second quarter that put the U.S. in control.

"It's not easy to just be put together and be expected to win a gold medal," guard Diana Taurasi said. "It's a special feeling."

Team USA clinched the top spot in the medals table for the fifth consecutive Summer Games, helped by David Boudia's victory in the men's 10-meter platform for the country's first gold in diving since 2000.

Boudia scored 568.65 points in the six-dive final, edging Qiu Bo of China by 1.8 points. Tom Daley of Britain settled for the bronze.

Mexico earned its first Olympic gold medal in men's soccer and left Brazil wondering if it will ever be able to add the title to its long list of triumphs.

Oribe Peralta scored 29 seconds into the final at Wembley Stadium and added another goal in the second half, leading Mexico to the 2-1 upset.

Hulk scored for Brazil in injury time, but Oscar missed a header in the final seconds to waste the last chance for a comeback in front of 86,162 fans.

"Mexico will be celebrating on the streets," coach Luis Fernando Tena said. "It is a great honor for a coach to see his players singing the national anthem with gold medals around their necks. It's a very important moment for Mexican football. It's a great moment for us."

The U.S. men's basketball team will play Spain for the Olympic title on Sunday, and Mike Krzyzewski told The Associated Press it will be his final game as the national coach.

When asked if he was sure, Krzyzewski didn't hesitate before again saying, "yes," this will be his last game.

With a win, Krzyzewski would join Henry Iba (1964, 1968) as the only U.S. coach to lead the Americans to gold medals in consecutive Olympics.

The rest of the Olympic action Saturday:

VOLLEYBALL

Jaqueline Carvalho had 18 points and Brazil beat the United States in four sets to stop the Americans from winning their first Olympic gold medal in women's volleyball.

Brazil became the third team to repeat as gold medalist. The Soviet Union won in 1968 and 1972, while Cuba won three straight starting with the 1992 Barcelona Games.

American star Destinee Hooker was held to 14 points.

Castro and Claudino celebrated the victory by leaping into the official's chair, and Brazil's coaches rushed to pile on the other players. Later, the Brazilians danced into the medal ceremony.

BOXING

Bantamweight Luke Campbell won Britain's first Olympic boxing gold medal in his division since 1908, dramatically knocking down rival John Joe Nevin of Ireland midway through the third round of a 14-11 victory.

China's Zou Shiming, light welterweight Roniel Iglesias, middleweight Ryota Murata and Ukrainian heavyweight Oleksandr Usyk also won their divisions.

Shiming defended his light flyweight gold medal from Beijing with a 13-10 victory over Thailand's Kaeo Pongprayoon, who angrily protested the result.

Iglesias beat Ukraine's Denys Berinchyk 22-15 for Cuba's first boxing gold in London after failing to win gold in Beijing.

Murata narrowly won the second boxing gold in Japan's Olympic history, beating Brazil's Esquiva Falcao 14-13 on the strength of a two-point holding penalty against Falcao in the final round.

Usyk capped the night with a 14-11 gold-medal victory over Clemente Russo of Italy, celebrating with a nimble Cossack dance in the center of the ring.

SAILING

Tamara Echegoyen, Angela Pumariega and Sofia Toro of Spain won the Olympic gold medal in women's match racing, thanks in part to a boat-handling error by Australia that swept its skipper into the water.

With the best-of-five match tied at one, the boats were sailing nearly side-by-side downwind in the third race in big waves on Weymouth Bay when the Australian crew lost control and its boat rolled on its side. Skipper Olivia Price was swept out of the back of the boat and her crew had to pick her up before continuing.

Spain won that race by 1 minute, 1 second, but the 20-year-old Price and her crew won the fourth race to force a deciding match.

In another mistake, Price was assessed a penalty in Race 5 for a right-of-way violation and Spain sailed ahead to win the gold, leaving the Aussies with the silver.

CANOE SPRINT

Britain's Ed McKeever won the men's 200-meter kayak sprint in its Olympic debut, living up to his billing as "Usain Bolt on Water."

McKeever powered his way to victory in 36.246 seconds in front of British Prime Minister David Cameron and his family. Spain's Saul Craviotto Rivero was second and Canada's Mark de Jonge beat France's Maxim Beaumont to bronze by three-hundreths of a second.

Ukraine's Yuri Cheban (men's singles 200-meter canoe sprint) and New Zealand's Lisa Carrington (women's singles 200-meter kayak sprint) also won gold. Yury Postrigay and Alexander Dyachenko of Russia took the men's 200 kayak sprint.

CYCLING - MOUNTAIN BIKE

Julie Bresset picked up the victory at her first Olympics, rolling through the English countryside and waving the French flag as she finished.

Bresset dominated the picturesque course at Hadleigh Farm. She took advantage of a mistake by defending gold medalist Sabine Spitz of Germany to build a massive lead, then rolled through the last of six laps all alone.

The 23-year-old Bresset started blowing kisses to cheering fans on the final straight. Spitz wound up with the silver medal, and Georgia Gould of the United States claimed bronze.

It was only the second Olympic medal in mountain biking for the Americans, who are credited with developing the sport in the 1970s. Susan DeMattei captured bronze at the 1996 Atlanta Games.

GYMNASTICS - RHYTHMIC

Evgeniya Kanaeva became the first rhythmic gymnast to win two Olympic all-around titles, defending her gold medal from Beijing.

Russia has captured the last four Olympic individual titles. It also has a chance for another four-peat in Sunday's group event, too.

Kanaeva posted the highest score in three of the four events and finished with 116.90 points. That was more than two points ahead of teammate Daria Dmitrieva. Liubou Charkashnya of Belarus won the bronze medal.

WRESTLING - FREESTYLE

Artur Taymazov of Uzbekistan won his third straight Olympic wrestling gold in the men's 120-kilogram division, beating Georgia's Davit Modzmanashvili in the final.

Taymazov joins Alexander Medved of the former Soviet Union and Russian great Alexander Karelin as the only male wrestlers to win gold medals in three straight games.

Azerbaijan won two titles, with Sharif Sharifov grabbing the gold in men's 84-kg freestyle and Toghrul Asgarov taking the men's 60-kg freestyle.

American Coleman Scott won a bronze medal in the 60-kg competition.

ELSEWHERE IN LONDON

Keshorn Walcott of Trinidad and Tobago won the men's javelin. ... Norway retained its Olympic title in women's team handball by beating Montenegro 26-23. ... Germany defeated the Netherlands 2-1 to win its second straight men's field hockey title and spoil a bid for a Dutch double in the sport. ... Russia collected two gold medals in race-walk events, with Elena Lashmanova winning the women's 20-kilometer and Sergei Kirdyapkin taking the men's 50k. Lashmanova broke the world record with a time of 1 hour, 25 minutes, 2 seconds. ... David Svoboda of the Czech Republic won the men's modern pentathlon. ... Taekwondo golds went to Italy's Carlo Molfetta (men's plus 80-kilogram) and Serbia's Milica Mandic (women's plus 67-kg). It was Serbia's first gold of the games.

Key Verse: Exodus 4:13

But he said, ?O my Lord, please send by the hand of whomever else You may send.?

Moses was 40 when he tried to protect his people with his own strength, killing the Egyptian who was cruel to the Hebrew workers. Now He?s 80. Instead of living as a son of the royal household of Egypt, he?s had 40 more years as a shepherd, working for his Father-in-law and raising a family. Is he ready to lead in the deliverance of the children of Israel from slavery? According to God, ?Yes.? According to Moses, ?No.? Just think of all God has done to prepare Moses. There was the miraculous rescue by Pharaoh?s daughter; his Hebrew early childhood education in his parents? home; his ongoing education in the palace in all the ways of the Egyptians; the supernatural revelation of the burning bush; the signs he asked for; the Name of God given to him, ?I am that I am;? and now he still doesn?t think he?s up to the job. When God calls us there is only one acceptable answer, ?YES LORD.? Today, let us go through the doors God opens. Failure to do so will displease God, as was recorded of Moses in Exodus 4:14. Almost every day I used to hear my Dad pray, ?God, may the smile of your approval be upon our lives.?

PRAYER FOR TODAY:

Lord God, here I am by Your grace. May I never try to do Your work on my own. I need You desperately. I praise You for the ways in which You?ve prepared me for today?s challenges. Let?s go forward. As You lead, I?ll follow. I pray this in the Name of Jesus who obeyed You 100%. Amen!

I can identify with Moses. Back in the early 1970?s at family altar, my son Reynold prayed night after night for at least 2 weeks, ?O God, please help Daddy to help those poor children in India.? Somehow his heart had been touched by their need. I would mumble under my breath something like this, ?Lord, I?ve got enough to do, please send someone else.? I was awakened in the middle of the night by a very insistent telephone ringing over and over. Finally, I got up, went downstairs to the phone, and gave a half-awake grumpy ?Hello.? The voice on the other end said, ?David, it?s Mark Buntain in Calcutta. I?ve got 800 children to feed and school today, and I?ve just received a cable message that we?ve been cut off from our funding. Can you help me?? Within a month, we had raised sponsors for over 1000 children, raised the monthly amount Mark received per child, and turned the sponsors over to the organization with the lowest operational overhead costs at the time, World Vision of Canada. That experience introduced World Vision to the effectiveness of using TV to raise child sponsorships.

Yours for obedience to God?s call,

David

US farmers expect poorest corn crop in a decade

(AP) ? A deepening drought in the nation's farm states has cut further into this fall's harvest, with farmers now expected to pull from their fields the lowest corn yield in more than a decade.

But American farmers are still expected to produce their eighth-largest harvest ever, and while there's sure to be a rise in prices at the grocery stores, there's little risk of a failed harvest that would lead to shortages on the shelves.

The U.S. Agriculture Department predicted the nation's biggest harvest ever in the spring, when farmers planted 96.4 million acres of corn ? the most since 1937. But it cut its estimate a month ago and again Friday, saying it now expects the nation to produce 10.8 billion bushels, the least since 2006.

If that estimate holds, the federal government says it will be enough to meet the world's needs and ensure there are no shortages. But experts say food prices will almost certainly climb as corn is a widely used ingredient found in everything from cosmetics to cereal, colas and candy bars.

The drought stretching across the U.S. from Ohio west to California is deepest in the middle of the country, and major farm states like Iowa and Illinois are seeing conditions get worse each week. Farmers credit advances in seed technology that have produced hardier, more drought-tolerant corn for any harvest at all.

"I have to be honest with you, I'm totally stunned we have corn with green stalks and leaves after going through weeks of 105-degree temperature," said Garry Niemeyer, the National Corn Growers Associated president who has 1,200 acres of corn and 800 acres of soybeans near Auburn, Ill. "Our corn yield normally would be about 190 bushels per acre. This year, if I get 110, I'd be thrilled to death."

The USDA's latest estimate predicts corn farmers will average 123.4 bushels per acre, down 24 bushels from last year in what would be the lowest average yield in 17 years. But the yield would still be as good as nearly a decade ago, when the average was about 129 bushels in a year without drought.

Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack trumpeted the resilience of U.S. farmers and ranchers on Friday, saying he didn't expect immediate increases in food prices and was optimistic the U.S. would continue meeting global demand for grain. The U.S. is the world's top exporter of corn, soybeans and wheat.

"Americans shouldn't see immediate increases in food prices due to the drought," Vilsack said during a trip to drought-stricken Nebraska. "What is important going forward is that we continue to do all we can to help the farmers, ranchers, small businesses and communities being impacted by this drought."

But experts have already been predicting increases in food prices. Rick Whitacre, a professor of agricultural economics at Illinois State University, said he believes the greatest impact will be in meat and poultry prices, given that many ranchers have sold off livestock as pastures dry up and feed costs rise.

The selloff will result in lower prices through December with a glut of meat on the market ? but higher costs beginning next year. Whitacre predicted an eventual 4 to 6 percent increase in the cost of pork and beef.

"You're going to see the ripple of this go out for quite a distance," he said.

The effect on packaged goods and other products is harder to predict because the price of corn may be only a small part of the total cost. For example, even with today's high corn prices, a 12-ounce box of cornflakes would have only about 8 cents worth of corn, said Paul Bertels, vice president of production and utilization at the National Corn Growers Association. That's a very small portion of the $4 or so consumers might pay for that box of cereal.

Dennis Conley, an agricultural economist in University of Nebraska's Institute of Agriculture and Natural Resources, said he expected to see nominally higher prices in U.S. supermarkets, although when "is the million-dollar question." He thought it might be a month or two before products using corn as an ingredient cost more.

Corn prices have already been going up with steady reports of worsening drought and crop damage, jumping from just under $6 a bushel in late June to over $8 a bushel in early August. There was little immediate effect from Friday's report, perhaps because the commodities sector expected the bad news.

"There was nothing really surprising. We've already had some private analysts suggesting the crop could be that low," said Mark Schultz, chief analyst at Northstar Commodity in Minneapolis. "In another two weeks there will be people picking corn in Indiana, Illinois, Iowa. So we'll start getting an idea of what these yields truly are."

Instant Personal Loans by Custom Credit Services | Loans

Finance | Loans | * Written by Ricky James | Friday, 10 August 2012 02:43 | Word Count: 374

It is an interesting fact that a large percentage of the adult population uses some form of credit or instant personal loan. A low interest personal loan from a personal loan company allows us to purchase products and services now and pay for them later through affordable monthly payments. A person does not need to have the best credit history to get a fast bad credit personal loan and if your credit is not good, this can be the ideal opportunity to repair your credit. Sometimes you can get caught in a vicious cycle of monthly payments with high interest that can strain your budget and this is when it is good to review your options regarding a quick personal loan.

We have to give credence to the fact that much of the increase in consumer spending is due to the personal loan companies offering access to easy personal loans, including loans after bankruptcy that give us opportunities to balance out debts that we could not with a traditional loan. Much of the money that traditional lenders give out as loans is based on collateral but this is not necessarily the case with low interest personal loans from alternative lenders. Owning assets such as real estate is not as stable across the board as we would like to think and personal loan companies in New York are aware of this. The concept of liquidity has changed over time and this is becoming clear to consumers when they fill out a personal loan application.

There are financial warning signs that every consumer should be aware of that will alert them with the fact that they are overextending themselves with interest payments that are too high and so they need to find a low interest personal loan to remedy the situation. You may need to consult with a bad credit personal loan company if you are paying only the lowest payment on your credit card every month or if you only pay your bills after the due date. You can have instant approval for a personal line of credit to help you when you take out payday loans to cover your immediate living expenses or charge your basic needs such as food and gas on credit cards.

Custom Credit Services is able to direct you to the right lenders so that you can be approved for a loan and/or line of credit. Custom Credit Services is available in all states except North Dakota and West Virginia.

China's Wu retains taekwondo title

Wu Jingyu of China retained her Olympic taekwondo crown with a dominant performance in the women's under-49kg category at London's ExCel Arena on Wednesday.

The twice world champion was always in control of the final against three-time world champion Brigitte Yague of Spain, winning 8-1.

Chanatip Sonkham of Thailand won the first bronze medal as she connected with two head-kicks in the final round to help her beat Elizabeth Zamora of Guatemala 8-0.

Fifth seed Lucija Zaninovic of Croatia took the other bronze medal with a golden point to beat Jannet Alegria of Mexico.

Top seed Wu, 25, was in control of the category all day and never looked like she could lose it. She said she's come a long way since her previous Olympic crown.

"They're different, back in 2008 I was still young and I had a lot of drive," she said. "These last four years have been quite hard on me because I had already won gold.

"I faced a lot of hardship in terms of opponents and the outside world.

"I'm very happy to win another gold this time. I've matured over the last four years and I've been rewarded for the experience I've garnered.

"The biggest reward is that I've become very calm and I'm able to accept hardship."

A three-point head kick in the first round of the final helped her to a 4-0 lead and from there she just eeked out her advantage with single-point kicks to the body.

Before that she was in devastating form and ended her quarter-final and semi-final early on obvious superiority, by accumulating a 12-point lead or more.

First round opponent Zamora made it to the end of her fight, although she was still comfortably beaten 10-2.

The quarter-final against Japan's Erika Kasahara was ended inside the second round as Wu had built up a 14-0 lead in double-quick time.

In the semis, twice European champion Zaninovic failed to make it to the end of the three rounds as she was beaten 19-7.

For Yague it was her first Olympic medal after a first round defeat in Athens and an injury-enforced absence from Beijing.

"I'm happy, it's a dream come true. It's true that I have three world titles but for some reason the Olympic one had always eluded me," she said.

"These Games were my last opportunity because I'm 31 and it's very difficult to maintain that level.

"Winning silver is very important, any medal is good."

Yague produced a stunning last round to beat the seventh-seeded Thai Chanatip in her semi-final.

Trailing 6-2 going into the final round she looked dead and buried but with time running out she levelled the scores at 9-9 with a four-point spinning head kick before nicking victory 10-9 with a sneaky punch.

Earlier she had beaten Carlena Carstens of Panama 7-2 and comfortably out-pointed Alegria 8-0.

Weather? Climate change? Why the drought is persisting and growing.

Several factors, including La Ni?a events, have contributed to the expanded drought, meteorologists say. Conditions in the West may be setting up for a 'megadrought' by century's end, researchers warn.

In late July 2011 the US drought had a parched core centered in the southern Plains and stretched along much of the southern tier. About 30 percent of the continental US was experiencing drought at varying degrees of severity, and another 11 percent was considered abnormally dry.

This year it has overspread most of the country.

Sixty-three percent of the continental US is now drought-stricken, a figure that grows to 79 percent when abnormally dry areas are included, according to the latest figures from the National Drought Mitigation Center in Lincoln, Neb.

"It's kind of like the blob in the old Steve McQueen movie,? says Martin Hoerling, a research meteorologist at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Earth System Research Laboratory.

Summer monsoons have brought some relief to the Southwest and up into the Rocky Mountain states. Early tropical storms also eased dryness along the Gulf of Mexico and into the southeastern corner of the country.

But forecasters are calling for the drought to expand its boundaries through the end of October to cover more of Michigan, Minnesota, and the Dakotas, while to the east drought is expected to move deeper into Pennsylvania and West Virginia.

Several factors have contributed to the expanded drought, meteorologists say.

The lingering aftereffects of two years' worth of colder-than-normal sea-surface temperatures in the eastern tropical Pacific ? a condition known as La Ni?a ? set the stage. La Ni?a events drive average storm tracks farther north than usual as they snake across North America. And La Ni?a tends to stifle hurricane formation in the Atlantic and Caribbean. Both contributed to a drier southern tier.

But for some parts of the United States, some researchers add, the dryness encouraged by this natural climate cycle appears to be reinforcing a longer-term drying that is consistent with climate models gauging the effects of global warming. For the West in particular, conditions may be setting up for what researchers call a ?megadrought? by the end of the century.

For the Midwest, the recent onset of drought was sudden.

Sri Lanka hands 37 Chinese fishermen to embassy

COLOMBO (Reuters) - Sri Lanka handed over 37 Chinese fishermen to their embassy on Tuesday, officials said, two days after the Sri Lankan navy arrested them for fishing without permission in the island nation's offshore waters.

The fishermen were arrested aboard two trawlers off the east coast town of Batticaloa on Sunday, along with two Sri Lankan agents.

China has been competing for influence in Sri Lanka with India, the island's most important ally, and has been Sri Lanka's biggest source of loans in the past two years, so holding the fishermen longer could have put strain on their increasingly close ties.

"The fault is not with the (Chinese) crew. The case is against the (Sri Lankan) owner now," Navy spokesman Kosala Warnakulasuriya told Reuters. "We have handed over the Chinese crew to officials from the Chinese embassy," he said.

Sri Lanka's police spokesman, Ajith Rohana, said the two Sri Lankan agents were given bail after appearing in court.

The trawlers have a license to fish outside Sri Lankan waters but were seized while fishing inside the 300 nautical mile zone. The agents' role was not immediately clear.

The Chinese embassy had "urged Sri Lankan authorities to handle the issue in accordance with the law, sort out the truth and release the Chinese fishermen as soon as possible", the state news agency Xinhua reported on Monday.

Sri Lanka's location astride an ancient Indian Ocean trade route makes it of strategic commercial and military interest to the United States, India and China.

Beijing has lent Sri Lanka hundreds of millions of dollars to build ports, roads, railways, power plants and a new airport, but Colombo has denied speculation that China wants military bases on the island.

Take the Interview: Saving Employers from the Pain of Unfit - BostInno

Danielle Weinblatt was tasked with helping out on a recruiting initiative when she was working in private equity. From that moment, she realized how painful the interview process was. Three minutes in, Weinblatt knew if she didn?t like a candidate. Yet, she?d be forced to sit there for a remaining 27 minutes anyway, because the interview was slated in a half-hour slot.

Weinblatt called Andrew Paradise, whom she?d met in Harvard Square while at Harvard Business School. At the time, Paradise was building AisleBuyer, which was acquired by Intuit back in April. He told Weinblatt he was tired of being on the phone screening candidates all the time, and she relayed her experiences to him, as well. They agreed video screening would be ideal.

Suddenly, a startup sparked.

Paradise had already tried getting Weinblatt to start a company with him months prior. She remembers him saying, ?You know, I?m a hacker, you?re a hustler. It would be a perfect pair.? So, when this dilemma presented itself, he knew they were onto something. ?We should call it ?Take the Interview,?? Paradise had said. ?People could just press this button.? And so, in the March of 2010, after Weinblatt and Paradise invested some capital, everything changed.

Take the Interview is now an online video interview software that allows employers to screen candidates, conduct job interviews online and reduce their costs per hire.

?I had no clue what I was doing or what it was going to become,? Weinblatt says. ?It was my pet project at HBS, yet somehow turned into this company with employees, a New York City office and investors.?

Since launching, Take the Interview has helped conduct about 16,000 interviews. The company started building a customer base in the tech industry, partnering with HR teams who want to reduce their screening time from 30 minutes to three, opening up the ability to screen even more candidates. When they see a candidate they do like, they can share the interview with senior-level management with the click of a button, making the decision process all the faster.

Take the Interview also boasts they can reduce a company?s cost by over 90 percent. ?A major company we work with in Boston has reduced their travel cost by 25 percent month by month,? Weinblatt says. No longer do companies need to fly applicants out for in-person interviews. The video component also makes HR more willing to set up interviews.

To Weinblatt, it made sense to partner with the startup, tech and software world first, because the company ?plays well into the millennial generation.? Those fields also understand the importance technology can play in automating processes. Since launching, Take the Interview has started partnering with hospitals, as well, who not only have the budget for the service, but are looking for younger people to take on administrative roles.

Weinblatt admits their current goal is to increase the number of companies they work with and improve the service for those companies. She?s quick to say they won?t lose their focus, though. Weinblatt referenced a conversation she had with investor and serial entrepreneur Bill Warner. She asked, ?Why do you think big startups fail?? His response was, ?Trying to do too many things at once.?

Weinblatt does say she?ll soon try and go back to Harvard Business School, though. After raising $775,000 in seed funding, it became apparent to Weinblatt she needed to build a company, not just a product. ?Capital was contingent on my commitment moving forward,? she says. Weinblatt announced she?d be leaving HBS on stage during her DreamIt Ventures Demo Day. ?I felt like I owed it to myself to at least test the waters.?

Apparently, those waters, and the startup community, were welcoming.

Why Mars again? A look at NASA's latest venture

PASADENA, Calif. (AP) ? NASA's new robot rover named Curiosity landed safely late Sunday in a huge crater near the equator of Mars and will soon begin its scientific studies. This marks NASA's eighth landing on the red planet and is its 19th Mars mission, including those by orbiters and other spacecraft.

Why Mars again?

The big unknown remains. Scientists want to know if any form of life ever existed there, and that means microscopic organisms. Curiosity is the most ambitious effort ever to burrow into that question, though it is not equipped to look for actual microbes. During its two-year exploration, it will try to answer whether the giant crater had the right conditions to support that type of life.

What will Curiosity do?

Curiosity carries a toolbox of 10 instruments, including a rock-zapping laser and a mobile organic chemistry lab. It also has a long robotic arm that can jackhammer into rocks and soil. It will hunt for the basic ingredients of life, including carbon-based compounds, nitrogen, phosphorus, sulfur and oxygen, as well as minerals that might provide clues about possible energy sources.

What does this mission cost?

$2.5 billion. Development took longer than planned, delaying the mission for two years and costing $1 billion more than the original budget. But that extra time is credited in part with the safe landing of the one-ton rover which required new technologies and highly complicated maneuvers.

When will we send astronauts to Mars?

President Barack Obama has set a goal for astronauts to orbit Mars by the mid-2030s followed by a landing. Before that can happen, the plan is to send astronauts to an asteroid first.

Oreo On Mars Rover 'Curiosity': 'We Come In Peace. With Oreo Cookies.'

oreo curiosity mars rover

Reddit points us toward one of Oreo's latest tweets, which contains the picture of an otherworldly cookie reminiscent of recent images beamed back to Earth from Mars rover Curiosity.

NASA's robotic explorer landed on the martian surface Monday after nailing a challenging landing, which required the vessel to endure "seven minutes of terror" -- meaning radio silence -- before controllers knew the outcome. The first images of the planet's barren landscape have excited scientists and the average citizens around the world alike.

The Atlantic offers some insightful commentary on this fictional (sorry, folks) Oreo's bright red-colored creme:

What's telling, though, is how casually the Oreo campaign, in its bid for virality, has merged the epic and the ordinary. Last night, we landed a robot on Mars. Today, a sandwich cookie celebrates that accomplishment. The fluidity here between history and banality -- and between science and pop culture -- is, actually, kind of wonderful. It represents an access point to a fairly complicated news story. It makes the epic seem accessible, and it makes the accessible seem just a little (teensy, tiny) bit epic.

Oreo's Mars-inspired cookie follows the cookie line's Pride cookie, which featured rainbow-colored creme.
